The Mesa Leadership Class of 2016 is working with the Boys & Girls Club for their project this year. One aspect of the project is to replenish the library. The outpouring of generosity from local authors has been incredible. The goal was to provide at least 10 different books of 10 copies each for children and teens. At this point they’ve collected more than 160 copies of new books. We offer our sincere thanks to these authors.

The Class of 2016 selected the Grant Woods Boys and Girls Club for their project this year. Class members have been working with the on-site Manager to determine the needs. The project is ambitious with 4 areas of emphasis.
The Book Club is collecting supplies and books to replenish the library at the Boys and Girls Club.
The Playground Enhancement Team is working to provide soccer field goals, repaint the basketball court, replace the sand in the play area with wood chips, and provide a BBQ set for community events.
A mural project will allow the community and students to be involved in enhancing the appearance of the playground.
The Office Renovation Team is working to update, restore, or replace existing furniture that isn’t structurally sound.
The class has had a cleanup day and a paint day. They are making great strides but they could use your help. a donation to the project would help make this transformation a success and would enrich the lives of the children in our community. Your donations are tax deductible.

Mesa Leadership Alumni and Members of the Current Class had a blast at our Annual Holiday get-together on Thursday, December 3 at the Mesa Arts Center (MAC) in the beautiful Brown Sculpture Courtyard. We collected 29 gift cards worth $345 for Helen’s Hope Chest. We also raised $115 for the Scholarship Fund through our raffle activities. MAC Artist Kyllan Maney made sure we were able to express our creative side. We made Shrinky Dinks–google it if you are furrowing your brow in confusion. We also created a Mesa Dream Share Cloud where we shared our dreams for Mesa in the magical balloon cloud tent. All while we learned about the MAC’s Creative Catalysts initiative to get young people, especially those under 40 to get involved in leadership in their community. We enjoyed delicious food from Zappone’s Italian Bistro and grooved to the music of Guitarras Latinas. Special Thanks to the i.d.e.a. Museum, Zappone’s and the MAC for their generous donations to our raffle.
The December Mesa Leadership class will be held in the Mesa Council Chambers and the focus will be on Government. The class will discuss Economic Development, they’ll get a Financial overview for the City of Mesa from Budget Director Candace Cannistraro. State Government will be represented by District 26 Senator Andrew Sherwood and District 16 Representative Doug Coleman. A public policy discussion will also be led by Eric Emmert from the Dorn Policy Group.

Jill is a Freelance Journalist and an Associate Faculty Member at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications. She is writing about her experience going through the Mesa Leadership Training and Development Program.

Our Make a Difference Day was a HUGE success! On Saturday October 24 a group of about 25 volunteers worked on cleaning the public garden and some vacant lots in the Washington/Escobedo neighborhood. Thanks to all of the volunteers from the neighborhood and from Mesa Leadership. People brought friends and family. We did a lot of great work in just a few hours. Much appreciation to the organizers who brought us all together for a fun and productive Sunday morning.
Maria, a representative from the neighborhood, who was helped get us focused and organized said, “Thanks to you, the Washington-Escobedo neighborhood woke up to a happier, beautiful, and more livable place!”
The September Class will be held at Benedictine University. Guests will include Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh, Mesa Sister Cities President Dustin Ewert, Mesa MLK Jr Committee President Angela Booker, Paz de Cristo Board Member and Human Resources Manager for St Vincent de Paul Dr. Michael Fleming and Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement Coordinator Jacque Starks. Activities will include a diversity exercise and a social services roundtable. It should be a great session for this remarkable class.
The first class will be held on Friday August 7 and focuses on Mesa Past and Present. Mesa Past will be the Changing Facades of Mesa presented by Vic Linoff. Marc Garcia and Michelle Streeter from Visit Mesa will talk about Mesa Present. There will be a personal perspective from long-time Mesa resident Ivard Brimley. There will also be Leadership Activities and Presentations from Terry Benelli and Bob Caldwell. The day will end with a dinner for the participants at the beautiful Mesa Country Club. A fantastic class getting off to a great start. Special thanks to Visit Mesa for hosting the class day, Hilton Phoenix/Mesa for providing the lunch, all the presenters and the board members and curriculum committee who work to make the experience educational and memorable.

Welcome to Mesa Leadership
The purpose of the Mesa Leadership Program is to cultivate leadership through education, exposure to the community, and interaction between class members. Our ultimate goal is to prepare students for a personal journey along the wonderful and rewarding path to community service.
